Craniosacral Therapy or CST

What is Craniosacral Therapy?

Craniosacral Therapy, or CST, is a branch of Osteopathy that has been developed over the past century.  Pioneered by American Osteopath Dr. William Garner Sutherland, who discovered the ‘pulse’ of the craniosacral system, Craniosacral Therapy involves gentle hands-on manipulation of the body that works directly upon the fluid system surrounding the brain and spine.

Just like your cardiovascular system, the craniosacral system has a rhythm felt throughout your body. This system surrounds the brain and spine, enclosing your central nervous system and flushing it with fluid to nourish the nervous system and rid the brain of waste.  All the nerves that extend throughout your body pass through the craniosacral system to connect with your brain.

Our body has the amazing ability to heal itself but sometimes life carries on regardless, and the energy and relaxation our bodies demand to help the healing process are spent elsewhere. Craniosacral Therapy supports and enhances the body’s ability to heal itself by identifying and releasing restrictions on movement within the body that promote a deep sense of relaxation and aid vitality.

By applying gentle touch to key areas of the body, I have been trained to identify the source of the obstruction and assist with the restoration of the natural movement of fluid and surrounding soft tissue to help your body ‘remember’ the correct position and promote self-healing.  The stress and tension held in the body’s tissues caused by physical and psychological trauma often don’t respond well to more forceful therapies because of the natural tightening reaction of the body tissue to forceful manipulation, which can inhibit or delay full healing. The gentle, corrective approach of Craniosacral Therapy works with your body to promote your own amazing self-healing ability.  It’s a versatile, non-invasive therapy that’s suitable for everyone, from newborns, children and teenagers to adults, expectant mothers and the elderly and can be effective for a wide variety of ailments.

What can I expect at a treatment?

Firstly, I will listen very carefully to the reasons for your visit while taking notes. Then, you will lay fully clothed on the treatment couch. If you find it difficult to lie flat, you can lie on your side or sit in a chair. Typically, I will then use a number of different gentle touches on your head, the base of your spine or other key areas. You may feel relaxed, warm tingling sensations or you may feel more energised. You may also experience seeing different colours and patterns or have a deeper sense of connecting with yourself and your body.  All of these experiences are normal.  A session generally lasts an hour, though this can vary.

Craniosacral Therapy and Preventative Health Care

Craniosacral Therapy is a way of relaxing the mind and body and counteracting stress.  Preventative health care can save time, money and frustration as well as maintain a good quality of life.  The negative effects of everyday life, stress, emotions, attitudes, and improper eating can throw the body out of balance.  If one part of the body does not work properly the whole body suffers, then minor aches, pains and general fatigue which are often the beginning of more serious complaints begin to surface.

Craniosacral Therapy is intended to complement, not replace, the relationship you have with your medical practitioner. If you have or suspect you may have a health problem, please see your doctor. Never disregard medical advice or delay in seeking it because of anything you have read on this website.
