What is Reiki?

Reiki (pronounced ray key) is a holistic Japanese complementary therapy literally meaning “life force” or “universal energy”.  It’s a method of natural healing that treats the whole person by channelling the positive force of the universe through the therapist and into your body. The history of Reiki is lost in time but many ancient cultures have passed on this form of healing through generations, using names like “chi”, “chakra”, “prana” and “nadis” for this positive healing energy. Reiki works on both the body and mind, promoting spiritual equilibrium and encouraging your body’s self-healing process.
Reiki is not a religion or a belief system. Anyone is welcomed to train as a Reiki practitioner and anyone, regardless of belief, can benefit from this positive, relaxing and regenerative therapy.  Reiki works both physically, mentally and spiritually, loosening blocked energy to relieve pain and encourage well-being by reducing stress, balancing emotions and supporting the body’s natural healing abilities.
Researchers at Stanford University conducted a study into Reiki and, using sensitive equipment, measured the energy flow through the therapist, entering through the crown chakra (head) and exiting through the palm chakras of the hands. In addition, Kirlian photography has captured the increase in emanation of this positive energy force from the hands during treatment.
Reiki energy is a positive energy force that encourages deep relaxation, soothes emotional turmoil and banishes negative feelings. It can bring clarity, and awareness, unlocking your true potential and energising your creative forces to bring a sense of purpose and focus back to your life. It also enhances the benefits of other therapies, both medical and complementary.
Who can benefit from Reiki?

Reiki is a very gentle, subtle treatment that is suitable for everyone, including babies and expectant mothers. Although Reiki is spiritual in nature, practitioners and those seeking treatment can be of any religion or none and no belief is necessary for Reiki to be effective. It can help bring deep relaxation, relief from physical pain and emotional suffering and promotes positive mental and spiritual connections and self-healing.

Examples of conditions that Reiki may help include:
  • Acute or Chronic pain
  • Allergies
  • Anxiety and stress

Reiki has also been found effective in reducing the side effects of cancer treatment and other regular medical treatments.
What can I expect at a treatment?

Once we’ve discussed what has brought you to me, you will lay fully clothed on the treatment couch. If you find it difficult to lie flat, you can lie on your side or sit in a chair. In a standard treatment, Reiki energy is channelled through my hands into various places around your body. This includes around the head and shoulders, stomach and feet, and occasionally other more specific areas based on your needs. I hold each position for a few minutes, depending on how much Reiki is needed there. The whole treatment normally lasts between 30 to 60 minutes.

Reiki and Preventative Health Care

Reiki is a way of relaxing the mind and body and counteracting stress.  Preventative health care can save time, money and frustration as well as maintain a good quality of life.  The negative effects of everyday life, stress, emotions, attitudes, and improper eating can throw the body out of balance.  If one part of the body does not work properly the whole body suffers, then minor aches, pains and general fatigue which are often the beginning of more serious complaints begin to surface.

Reiki is intended to complement, not replace, the relationship you have with your medical practitioner. If you have or suspect you may have a health problem, please see your doctor. Never disregard medical advice or delay in seeking it because of anything you have read on this website.
