Hopi Ear Candling

What is Hopi Ear Candling?

A Hopi Ear Candle therapy (or Thermal Auricular Therapy) is a gentle, non-invasive massage for your ears. Used by the Ancient Greeks and popularised by the native American Hopi Indians of North Arizona, this cleansing, purifying and healing practise helps to loosen excess ear wax, remove impurities and gently rebalance the pressure in the ears, sinuses and upper respiratory tract.
Hopi Ear Candles are cotton tubes that have been soaked in a blend of beeswax, honey and various herbs.  When the candle is lit in the ear, it acts like a chimney.
The warm air inside rises, creating a mild vacuum at the base, which helps to loosen compacted earwax and debris and gently stimulates the eardrum through pressure waves.  This gentle massaging of the middle and inner ear through the gentle vibration of the eardrum helps to regulate and balance the pressure in the whole of the upper respiratory tract, including the sinuses and Eustachian tubes. The gentle radiant heat of the candle coupled with a light facial massage also helps to stimulate the lymphatic and immune systems whilst increasing peripheral blood circulation, encouraging the release of toxins from the body. It is a deeply cleansing, rebalancing and relaxing experience.
Who can benefit from a Hopi Ear Candle treatment?

Hopi Ear Candle therapy can be used to treat a variety of conditions in both children and adults. It is particularly effective for those who fly frequently, parachute or dive and for common complaints in the elderly such as Tinnitus and hearing loss. I have also had very positive results treating people with vertigo and dizziness. As an enhancement to Hopi Ear Candling, I can also offer Craniosacral Therapy around the head area, extending a session from around 60 to 90 minutes.

Examples of conditions that Hopi Ear Candling can help include:
  • Asthma
  • Anxiety
  • Catarrh
  • Colds & flu
  • Compacted earwax
  • Glue ear
  • Hay fever
  • Headaches & migraine
  • Neuralgia
  • Post flying/diving pressue
  • Rhinitis

  • Snoring
  • Sore throats
  • Stress

What can I expect from a Hopi Ear Candle treatment?

First of all, we will have a discussion and I will make brief notes of your medical history and any other factors affecting your well-being.  Then, I will ask you to lay fully clothed on your side on the treatment couch.  I will gently place the candle in your ear and light it to start the cleansing and rebalancing process. Don’t worry, no wax will drip and I only use candles that don’t drop ash. The candles also have an internal filter to ensure no residue or wax enters the ear. Once the candle has burned down to a specific mark, it will be extinguished in water and we will repeat the process in your other ear. Each candle takes between 10 to 20 minutes to complete its cleansing and rebalancing process. I complete your treatment with a light facial massage that helps the lymphatic system drain, your sinuses rebalance and stimulates blood flow followed by a short period of relaxation. The treatment takes around 45 minutes but it is particularly effective when combined with an additional CST therapy, taking the whole session to around 90 minutes.

Prior to treatment, I recommend putting a couple of drops of olive oil into each ear over a few days to help loosen any compacted earwax.

Hopi Ear Candle Therapy is intended to complement, not replace, the relationship you have with your medical practitioner. If you have or suspect you may have a health problem, please see your doctor. Never disregard medical advice or delay in seeking it because of anything you have read on this website.
